70-feet tall statue of Lord Buddha at Rajgir in Nalanda
district of state.

It is second tallest statue of Buddha in the country.

The statue has been installed above 16 metre radius
pedestal in middle of lake Ghora Katora.

It has been made from 45,000 cubic foot pink sand
stone.

The Bihar government has launched Safe City
Surveillance Scheme for checking crime against
women.

It aims to bring all major public places under watch of
close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and improve

The scheme has been launched in a phase-wise
manner, will commence from capital city Patna.

NMCG approves Eight Projects under Namami
Gange Programme

The Executive Committee of National Mission for
Clean Ganga (NMCG) has approved eight projects
worth Rs. 700 crore under Namami Gange Programme.

The four projects pertain to sewage management in
Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal, three are
related to treatment of drains through bio-remediation
and one related to inventorization and surveillance of
Ganga River.

Bihar Assembly passes Bihar Prohibition and Excise
(Amendment) Bill, 2018

Bihar state assembly has passed Bihar Prohibition and
Excise (Amendment) Bill, 2018 with 16 amendments
to dilute some of stringent provisions in Bihar
Prohibition and Excise Act, 2016.

The prohibition law was enforced in the state April
2016, banning manufacture, sale or consumption of
liquor.

Vriksharopan Abhiyan

National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) had
organised Ganga Vriksharopan Abhiyan in five main

The drive was launched 9th July, 2018 for as week upto
15 July 2018 which was observed as “Shubharambh
Saptah”.

The compaign was initiated as part of Forest

Worsening air quality major cause of premature
deaths in India: Study

According recent research, worsening air quality in last
two decades has emerged as one of major reasons for
high numbers of premature deaths in India.

The research was conducted by Indian Institute of

Energy Development (CEED).

NTPC signs MoU with Bihar Government to improve
performance of power sector in Bihar

The NTPC Limited has signed Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) with Bihar Government to improve
performance of power sector in the state.

The MoU envisages transfer of three power generation
facilities in Bihar to NTPC.

These three power generation facilities are Barauni
Thermal Power Station, Kanti Bijlee Utpadan Nigam
Limited (KBUN) and Nabinagar Power Generating
Company (Pvt.) Limited (NPGC).

Resources held in Kolkata

The first regional conference of eastern states on Water
Resources was held in Kolkata, West Bengal in bid to
address outstanding water resources issues.

Bihar Governor Satya Pal Malik given additional
charge as Governor of Odisha

President Ram Nath Kovind has given Bihar
Governor Satya Pal Malik (72) additional charge of
Odisha until regular arrangements are made.

He was given additional charge after incumbent
governor S C Jamir completed his five-year tenure.

The five-time Chief Minister of Nagaland S C Jamir
had taken over as Odisha governor in March 2013
after serving as governor of Goa and Maharashtra.

Government inks loan agreement with ADB for
Improvement and Expansion of Water Supply in Bihar

The Union Government has inked $84 million loan
agreement with Asian Development Bank (ADB) for
improvement and expansion of water supply in Bhagalpur
and Gaya towns in Bihar.

The loan has 25-year term, including grace period of 5
years with annual interest rate determined in accordance
with ADB’s lending facility based on London interbank
offered rate (LIBOR) and commitment charge of 0.15% per
year.

This agreement is for tranche 2 loan, part of $200
million multi-tranche financing facility (MFF) for
Bihar Urban Development Investment Program that
was approved in 2012 by ADB.

The program aims to provide sustainable urban
infrastructure and services in four towns in Bihar
–Gaya, Bhagalpur, Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur.

India and ADB sign $200 Million Loan to improve
State Highways in Bihar

It will finance widening and upgrading of about 230
kms state highways in Bihar to all-weather standards
with road safety features.

Since 2008, ADB has provided four loans to Bihar
amounting to $1.43 billion to upgrade about 1,453 km
of State Highways and to construct new bridge.

Bihar State Highways III Project (BSHP-III) was
approved by ADB Board in October 2018.

two-lane width with road safety features and paved
shoulders including reconstructing, widening and

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar flags off projects worth over
Rs 500 crore

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated and
laid foundation stones of around 750 projects, worth
more than Rs 500 crore, in Begusarai and Khagaria
districts.

Chief Minister launched “Vikas Samiksha Yatra”.

Nitish Kumar flagged off 294 projects worth Rs 236
crore at GauchhariKataha village in Khagaria in
January, 2018.

Later, he flagged off another 462 projects totalling
around Rs 321 crore at Barbigghi village in Begusarai.

Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

Earlier, Jardalu mango, Katarni rice and Magahi paan

Bihar cabinet approved scheme to give Rs 1 lakh
interim relief among other proposals

Bihar government approved a scheme for providing
interim relief of Rs. 1 lakh to those affected by mob
violence besides speedy trial of such cases in 2018.

The scheme provides for an interim relief of Rs one
lakh to victims of mob violence within a month of the
incident.

To hear such cases at fast track courts to ensure its
completion within 6 months was given.

Cabinet approved construction of New Domestic
Terminal Building and other allied structures at
Patna Airport

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired
by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi approved
the construction of New Domestic Terminal Building

This project would cost Rs.1,216.90 crore.

It is a part of the ‘Package for Bihar’, announced by
the Prime Minister.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar launched Mukhyamantri
Kanya Utthan Yojana for empowerment of girls.

A sum of Rs 7221 crore will be spend in a year on the

It will be run by three departments — education, health
and social welfare.

It will provide Rs 54,100 from the birth of a girl child
till she graduates.

lining project of the Son canal in Shahabad –
Bhojpur region of Bihar

This approval by Union Minister of State (IC) for
Power and New & Renewable Energy Shri R.K

The estimated cost of this project is USD 503 million
(Rs 3272.49 crore) out of which USD 352 million is
being provided by ADB.

project launched in Darbhanga , Bihar

This was launched by Sulabh International, an
organisation that introduced the concept of ‘Sulabh
Sauchalya’ in the country.

The foundation of the project at Haribol pond in
Darbhanga Nagar Nigam premises was laid by Sulabh
International’s founder Dr.Bindeshwar Pathak.

It would be managed by Self Help group of Darbhanga
Nagar Nigam.

The water purification process has a capacity to purify

Bihar govt launches new crop insurance scheme
‘Bihar State crop Assistance scheme’ with effect
from Kharif (monsoon) this year

This decision was taken by a meeting chaired by the
Chief Minister Mr. Nitish Kumar.

Under this scheme the farmers would get a
compensation of Rs7500 per hectare if less than 20%
of the crop is damaged .

And if more than 20% of crop is damaged , Rs.10000
would per hectare would be given as compensation.

Kishanganj

May 2018, Bihar Cabinet approved the setting up of a
Fisheries College at Kishanganj.

The cost of FisheriesCollege is Rs 40.31 crore in
2018-19 financial year.

It also approved creation of 88 new posts in Transplant
and Nephrology departments of Patna Medical College
and Hospital (PMCH) for starting the kidney transplant
facility there.

As per NCRB data, crime against SC/ST is lowest in
West Bengal.

Madhya Pradesh reported the highest rate of crime
(43.4%) against SCs specifically, while West Bengal
had the lowest at 6%.

Rajasthan reported the highest rate of crime (12.9%)
against STs specifically, while West Bengal had the
lowest at 1.6%.

maximum speed of 110 km/hr.

with Mithila paintings

Mithila art, also referred to as Madhubani art is

More than 225 artists, comprising 80 per cent women,

wall area of more than 14000 sq ft has been fully
painted with various themes under traditional Mithila

Bihar bans sale of loose cigarettes

In February, 2018 Bihar government issued a
notification announcing ban on the sale of loose
cigarettes in Bihar.

The notification regarding this ban was issued by
Bihar’s health department’s special secretary Lokesh
Kumar Singh. Lokesh Kumar Singh is also the
executive director of Bihar Health Society.

Bihar has become the 12th state in India to ban the
sale of loose cigarettes.

Water Resources Ministry Signs MoU with Bihar and
Jharkhand for Completion of North Koel Reservoir
Project

Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and
Ganga Rejuvenation, Government of India has signed
a MoU with State Governments of Bihar and
Jharkhand for completion of balance works of North
Koel reservoir project.

The project is scheduled to be completed in 30 months
at the estimated cost of Rs. 1622.27 crores.

This project is situated on North Koel river, a
tributary of Soneriver.

As per the MoU, out of the estimated cost of balance
works of Rs. 1622.27 crores, Rs 1378.61 crore will be
provided by Central Government as a grant from Long
Term Irrigation Fund (LTIF) under Pradhan Mantri
Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY).

Rs. 243.66 crores will be borne by Bihar and
Jharkhand through the loan financed by National Bank
for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).

Delhi is the richest state, Bihar the poorest: NFHS-4

The Report of National Family and Health Survey
(NFHS-4) conducted among more than 6 lakh
households in 2015-16, Delhi is the richest state while
Bihar is the poorest.

The report outlines that poverty is widespread in
rural India as 29% of the rural population has
wealth levels equivalent to bottom 20% of the
country’s population. While for urban India, the
figure is just 3.3%.

Delhi is the richest states with 60% of their households
in the top wealth quintile. Bihar is the poorest state
having more than 50% households in the bottom
wealth quintiles.

Bihar cabinet grants Rs 105 crore for Bihar
Mahadalit Vikas Mission

January, 2018 the Bihar cabinet allocated funds worth
Rs 105 crore for Bihar Mahadalit Vikas Mission,
which formulates and implements schemes for the
most backward sections among the Scheduled Castes.

This was declared in a Bihar cabinet meeting headed
by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

In the cabinet meeting, it was also decided to construct
a high security jail in Phulwarisharif block of Patna.

The construction of this jail would cost around Rs
56.72 crore. Maoists and dangerous criminals will be
held in this jail.

Bihar Government bans electronic cigarettes

Bihar State Government has imposed a ban on
manufacture, distribution, sale, purchase, display and
advertisement of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes)
across the state.

E-cigarettes are handheld battery-run devices which
are smoked just like a conventional cigarette. However
the ingredient (in liquid form) may differ.

The ban also applies to online sale and purchase of
e-cigarettes.
